James first began his martial arts journey in Japanese Jiu Jitsu before moving onto and competing in submission grappling and MMA, with an amateur MMA record of 5-3-3. After deciding to focus more on ground fighting, James started training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, competing and winning his division at white belt in the Liverpool Open and Blackpool Open. Joining Wombourne Legacy BJJ (formerly Gracie Barra Wombourne) in 2019, he has worked his way from Blue belt through to Purple and recently won Gold at the Jiu Jitsu Derby.

James is a valued instructor and continues to train and teach at the academy
